A hauntingly beautiful ballad  , when you listen tot it picture yourself in a  bar on the corner of 6th Avenue and 34 th Street.Your sitting on the last stool at the end of the bar, 4 martini's into a 8 martini night wondering if happiness will ever be within reach. I know I sound like a chick. I don't care, the Sax in the song is fantastic,  the  one thing this world  needs is more great SAX.  Next   tune is the theme song for  "The Deer Hunter ". A movie that is at the top of my list for the greatest ever... I know it is not everyones cup of tea, maybe it is the fact of the Vietnam War was during my years.  The acting  is top notch , unforgettable scenes , go online and watch the interviews with the actors after the movie came out, it changed their lives.  Also the actor John Cazale , who had a very prominant  role in the Godfather movies as well, was dieing of cancer during the filming unbeknownst to many of the other actors.  He and Meryl Streep had a fling during the filming, she did know of his illness. OMG I sound like a TMZ reporter. That is it from here for now, my shoulders are acheing, maybe it's because I've been carrying this drivel around all day...

Hope these turned out a neat sunrise buck,.  and a doe talking to a rooster roosting.   Also a nice medium buck with tail up looking for a girlfriend.  Recieved about an inch of snow last night pretty chilly ,Highs around freezing lows 15 or so.

Why?

Rita and I went to mass this morning, we go most weekends. I at times am that guy who at 55 minutes starts looking at my watch, but do try. Today Father  Carver  Came as close as anyone has to answer the question " Why ?" , at least for me. Why does God let that little 5 year old girl go into the Opthamologist with a little blurry vision and her family come out , crushed knowing she might not be there baby for more than a few months?  Why does God let those bastard terrorist hide behind their children using them as shields forcing the just to feel unjustified.  Why does God let our Fathers and Mothers who showed us the way to lead a good and honorable life go thru their last few months in misery and  pain?  I won't even attempt to paraphrase Father Carver .But using Gods love for us as a anchor he got thru to this old cynical Scotsman. That's enough of " The Sermon from the couch",  hope all is well with you. Would really like to know if you folks viewing from Europe and points of the globe are for real. Lots to be thankful for except

Happy Thanksgiving one and all . This time of year I do feel for those of us who are out of work and don't have a lot of Hope. Especially when America basically elects those who for 4 years have been saying " I 've tried nothing man and I 'm all out of ideas". Not to sure how we are going to get out of this mess, very glad my immediate family are working. You probably didn't know this but the Laird motto is "We hope for better things". Found that little nugget when looking thru some old papers from Scotland. It's almost as if they left off the remaining sentence of " We expect the worst". Truly sums up the Scottish way.   If you are wondering what I want for Christmas, and I know you are. Wouldn't it be nice if someone could come up with a damn pillow that a normal person could sleep on without waking up with a headache , my pillow my ass. And how come the slippers you buy now days fall apart in a week, my old man had the same slippers for 40 years. Ok  I know I sound like  Walter Matthaw. I apologize up front , for offending you and for going for the lowest hanging fruit. Hope you got a chance to watch Nancy Pelosi in her press conference last week. she had a couple of dozen woman standing behind her in support of her being named the minority leader. Wow the women in that photo, were scary.Either some one in the room had thirds of  the refried beans special for lunch or The plastic surgeons in D.C. Are doing two -fears. You know guys that look like the one the School librarian gave you when you simply asked  "Is Oh, Calcutta. Calling all coyotes

 The cat and I were just sitting on the wood pile telling each other how much we admired Elvis Pressley. When a shot rang out from our property to the south. Edna the calico cat said  "He'll no your on your own". So I piled in to the Jeep and headed over to confront whoever it was. My attorney Cory, has advised me on numerous occasions that it might be good for my health to NOT confront half drunk hunters who are pointing guns out of their windows.  as I approached this pickup I recognized the two inside to be neighbors , they were laughing and said Laird you were gonna jump all over us weren't you. I said Damn straight as I pulled my 357 and leveled it at them. Now wait a minute that didn't happen . That is just silly talk , but I had you didn't I.  Actually they were hunting Coyotes which I encourage. They said his brother is coming up this winter with some friends from Missoula for a Coyote hunting competition. Wondering if any of you would like to put a team in the competition? Sounds like fun. By the way they had three dead dogs in the back go his pickup he said they might be worth 100 bucks skinned later this winter.

wee ones left

Looks like a few little bucks are hanging around the big trees  and of course weirdo made it thru the season .  I think the bigger bucks might be in hiding for a couple of weeks, we'll wait and see. I watched just enough of Obama's news conference to realize he wasn't going to resign , turned tv off. I think we are seeing some Chicago style politics going on with  all of this adultery and shenanigans with the Generals.  It is  going to make one hell of a book someday, like my Rabbi always says "The truth always comes out" Houy. It has taken me a couple of days to get my mind around General Petreaus and this man woman rolling around under a desk like a couple of ferrets in heat. Just wrote a book of essays that are supposd to be comical I  will be the judge of that. My ongoing saga of Me vs Pothead neighbor has taken another twist, my new BFF Jeremy Moran the builder who remodeled our home in Missoula has came up with a plan to appease the inspectors  at the Courthouse, I won't bore you with details but my treehouse WILL be legal soon.  Then I will be gathering up a posse to tar and feather one Chris miller alias pothead. it's over

Having some trouble tried to e nter a new post it rejected it , everyone's a critic. So will just say had some nice pictures of a medium buck , but alas he was taken today by a friend of mine who with his friend walked the creek today in 14 degree weather. So it was a good clean hunt , the pictures were deleted in a show of respect.  That takes the total to 8 , at least, the number of bucks killed on the creek this season.  Rita says this might be the last season, she feels for the wildlife. The boys did say between Freds trees and the creek  they saw in the neighborhood  of 50 plus deer today. Mostly does and fawns  with a few  little bucks. Will keep you in the loop on photos of the survivers. Also they said saw a track of some kind of a cat ,not big enough for a mountain lion probably  , possibly a bobcat.  In honor of my brother Jim's family I will kill this Cat.  I apologize for my lack of wit this evening , Good night now.

It was a grand life

The headline in  the Havre Daily read John Laird Killed.  So now my interest is piqued.  It read, John  Laird of Laird Montana, one of the best known men in the northern section of the state, was instantly killed at his ranch at East Butte thursday by a flywheel that flew from a gasoline engine and struck him probably in the head.  The date on the paper is Nov ember 9,  1912.   this was  taken word for word.  100 years ago my namesake  actually my great uncle John Laird,  Blackjack Laird the origional, died some 12 miles from where I sit. The story goes it was the first threshing machine in Liberty Co. Great uncle Frank his brother always said "Nothing any good happened after Jack died".  Probably true  because from then on a very prosperous ranch started to deterioate to the point that the two remaining brothers started selling off property and by 1950 the only land left was where we call home, a mere fraction of what once was. 50000 sheep roamed thousands  of acres , story goes that the ranch broke 1000 horses one winter for the calvary either Canadian or American  not too sure on that.  The home place was only 2 or 3 miles from the Canadian border.  The ranch was started in the year 1888. For your reference Custers last stand was in the Year 1876. Enough about the good old days. As for the present 8 inches of snow, chill factor of -30 winds at 20 mph most of today temps below zero at 6 this evening and falling. Rita and I were planning our Saturday night tickle party in our skivies but might cancel too damn cold.  Looks like Sweden is on board finally, where are you Ireland?

thoughts during a blizzard

Heard today that my friends at the friday  breakfast club are reading,  good on you brothers I  am honored. I was visited by an archangel last night He said that the Devil was not into punctuation anymore he's moved on and is  currentlyrunning Obamas Foreign policy.  Afew random thoughts before i rant. My research has shown that in 1925  John Oswood trapped THE LAST WOLF IN LIBERTY COUNTY a big deal was made of it a picture of him holding the pelt  was in the local paper.  He looks to be a man of average height and I say the wolf with full hide was from his shoulder to his knees. AS most of us know there was a wolf killed on our property this fall that weighed 140 lbs  and  would easily held upright from nose to tip of tail would be 6 and a half feet to 7 feet. Our federal Government likes to do things in a big way. You dumb asses. deputy sheriff Fossen dead

the story begins at 8 am thursday  october 10  deputy fossen was called from the police department in hill county that a car was stolen in havre mt  and there is reason to believe it was headed down hiway 2 toward chester   the good deputy headed east to set up road blocks while enroute he notices a hitchhicker at the turn into joplin his hometown stopping to check with the man there was a struggle and according to cecil heydon an eyewitness shots were fired and one man fell into the ditch and the car sped off heading west calls were  made to the liberty county sheriff fossens long time boss mr remington,   the report was mr fossen lay bleeding profusely from 5 gunshots to the neck and abdomen and locals had put him in a car and were headed to the liberty co hospital fossen one who could be counted upon to settle most situations told the men  TAKE IT EASY BOYS      he died before they reached chester.            fossens car was spotted on the north side of the tracks in the municipality of chester  care was taken to approach it with  guns drawn  to the officers dismay   the car was empty  NOW THE MANHUNT BEGAN by 10.00 am  the men started showing up in town  soon the gun carrying posse numbered 200  no time was wasted with any formalities the order was to find this cold blooded killer  who was still hiding in our town  by 1.00 pm  most if not all good people of chester had locked there homes and drawn their curtains  praying that there would be a quick end to this nightmare  the day passed slowly   till it was evident that darkness would soon blanket the good as well as the evil, the cold was numbing with a few inches of snow on the ground,  some were thinking he  must have slipped town  but how, all the trains were stopped  no cars were allowed thru town  for the last 6 hours  he must still be here   at 6 pm barber mahaffey closed up shop  and was walking home  one of a few men not carrying a weapon that evening when he heard a voice in the darkness  coming  from the vicinity of the farmers union elevator outhouse hey he said  " hey come over here i need help"  mahaffey being no dummy flagged down the patrolling posse and  they confronted the voice in the dark    with guns at the ready  sherif remington ordered the man out into the light    silence    again "come out"  this time followed by a blast from mr remingtons 38  into the ground  just in front of the outhouse.   the culprit with raised hands staggered  out thru the door of the commode  screaming "What did I do" restraint was used by most of the men there not all      the  last duty Deputy sheriff Fossen performed was to attempt to arrest one Mr Donald  L  Bujok  21 from  Roundup mt ,  Otto Fossen was a  man who could understand the weakness of humanity, a man who kept the peace in his community, in his state and in his heart. this happened  on October 10  1957  thought you should know

a look back in time

rita and i went into chester today for business and while there helped mother clean out some of her basement in doing so found a very interesting large  say two feet by three feet  album full of old i mean old photos  actually not photos but pictures that some one cut out of newspapers from 1918  the new york times and chicago tribune etc  and glued in this album   who would do such a thing  well my first guess is my great grandmother elizabeth who lived a mile from where i sit and who recieved these papers on a weekly or monthly schedule   my take is this  she kept these pictures  and looked at them  so she could feel like she was there there are a lot of pictures of stylish ladies posing for a camera at social events in new york  also lots of political figures from around the world, i have refinished the table that she and great grand dad jimmy used to sit at and by the kerosene lamp would read these papers   and dream,  almost a hundred years ago   ,  as crazy as it sounds  there are times  maybe when theblizzard hits  so hard it takes your breath away  or when  that melancholy gloaming  crosses the fields on a late fall    evening, i can feel the bond of  the prarie       i am off to milk the chickens  good night
